Out of Africa – and Into a New Hobby for my Husband

All photos in this post (except the photo of him) were taken by my husband with his shiny but still diminutive in size but not in power new camera.

As mentioned in the iPhone post, while I was merrily capturing images on my always handy iPhone, I bestowed a new and proper camera on my husband for any photos that were out of my 10x zoom range.

A week before we left, I had a minor freakout that my iPhone strategy for Africa might be reckless.  This was likely a once in a lifetime experience.  What if I missed something via my iPhone strategy?  My minor insecurity further bubbled to the surface when I sat behind a parent at a swim meet with a 40x zoom.  Whoa!  His kid was in the furthest lane possible and with his camera he could see his son like he was just one lane over.

I raced home from the swim meet to research small cameras with a 40x zoom.  After much research I added the latest Canon Powershot to my Amazon cart.  The husband grumbled a bit… pointed out that I already had a big fancy camera with super big lens.  But he left the topic alone.

On the first day I quietly handed him the camera to see what would happen.  I am the memory keeper of the family.  My other half has more of a live in the moment – why do you have to record everything? – mentality.  This changed in Africa.  Inspired by the scenery and the wildlife, he quickly figured out his favorite setting (sport mode) and asked us politely to stop moving around so his camera would stay stable.  We got shushed a few times so he could concentrate.  And it was all worth it!

The hobby maybe ephemeral, but we will always have these photos to commemorate this short lived passion.  I am guessing a lot of these images will end up enlarged and hanging on our walls so we can admire his work (and the animals, trees, and landscapes) for years to come.  Fine by me.

AMAZING! Justin and I traveled through Kenya and Tanzania on our honeymoon and it truly was the trip of a lifetime. That last shot of the sunset is a stunner!

I cannot wait to see you soon and am loving your updates.

Have a great weekend, my friend!
